Author Laura Lee Bahr recently made her second appearance on the YouTube interview series Horror Makes Us Happy, joining hosts Steve and Chris for a wide-ranging conversation about her work, her writing process, and what's coming next.

Bahr, who first appeared on the show in January 2022, noted that many of the themes from that earlier conversation — grief, power imbalances, self-determination, and finding hope in the face of things beyond our control — ended up finding their way into her novel Who Is the Liar? The book, told from the perspective of a 10-year-old, explores those ideas in ways that are both unsettling and deeply human.

The conversation also gave listeners an early glimpse at her upcoming release, The Knocking, due out July 14th. The novel is Bahr's first foray into historical fiction, set in 1850s New York and following a witty, sharp-edged newspaper woman drawn into the early world of séances and spirit communication. Bahr described it as a lighter, more joyful project than her previous book, while still delivering on gothic atmosphere and genuine scares.

One of the more fascinating tangents touched on the real history behind the story — specifically how mediumship became an unexpected avenue for women's voices in a society that largely excluded them from public life.

The episode also ventured into film territory, with discussions ranging from Sinners to the Greek mythology underpinning Killing of a Sacred Deer, and yes, the great Titanic door debate.

Bahr mentioned upcoming appearances at BizarroCon in Portland, Oregon in May, and NiCon in Lowell, Massachusetts in July, with a possible stop at StokerCon in Pittsburgh this June.

The full interview is available on the Horror Makes Us Happy YouTube channel. Who Is the Liar? is available now, and The Knocking can be pre-ordered on Amazon
